House Democrats suffer through difficult New York City field hearing

Image
House Democrats took quite the beating during Monday's field hearing in New York City. Early in the hearing, Rep. Hank Johnson got scolded by a testifier when Johnson said "The Republican witnesses who have used their time to criticize District Attorney Bragg have served as props in a MAGA Broadway production." After the audience negatively reacted to Rep. Johnson, a testifier replied "Please don't talk down to us witnesses, please." How insulting. Some of the props witnesses included Jose Alba, the bodega owner who stabbed Austin Simon in self-defense after Simon attacked Alba and Madeline Brame, whose son Army Sgt. Hason Correa was stabbed in Harlem. Another testifier who ripped DA Bragg was Barry Borgen, a Jewish man who criticized "Bragg for a lack of stronger sentences for the suspects in an antisemitic attack against his son Joey. One of those suspects, Waseem Awawdeh, said he would 'do it again' after his arrest." Watching Daniel G...

DFL spin on GDP, climate change

Image
I don't know which grade school this child is attending but the Times should be ashamed of publishing this LTE . In the LTE, we're told that "Mainstream economic dogma holds that the gross domestic product (GDP) is the main determinant of economic growth for any society." Later, we're told that "our world is plagued by the corrosive effects of climate change. Data shows that human activities, the exploitation of natural resources and the continual burning of fossil fuels have been the dominant cause of this crisis. Inequality also persists as the wealth-income gap has dramatically widened over the past 40 years in all countries. Additional issues remain prevalent in our daily lives such as racism, sexism, and political polarization. Yet the GDP cannot and is unable to measure these issues." What simpleton thinks that GDP is the only thing measured to determine whether we're living in a healthy, thriving nation? Further, what percentage of people livi...

Jerry Nadler's Twilight Zone Judiciary Committee hearing strategy

Image
Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has a strategy for this morning's field hearing in New York City. Jerry Nadler's strategy is -- wait for it -- to insist that the Big Apple's "crime is only an illusion manufactured by the party’s political enemies." Nadler "said he will come out swinging in defense of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg during the panel’s Monday hearing in New York." Jim Jordan doesn't have to come up with a bizarre strategy like Nadler does. Jordan's Republican panelists just have to ask probing questions of today's witnesses . Scheduled to testify today are "a bodega worker, the mother of a homicide victim, and a woman whose boyfriend was killed." Jennifer Harrison, a victims-rights advocate who has been called by Republicans to testify at the Monday hearing, said "I dare Jerry Nadler to ask me or [crime victims] to our faces … and tell us why the lives that are being dest...

The Democrats' fascist blind spot

Image
It's pretty obvious that Democrats don't see their fascist tendencies. Robert Reich, Bill Clinton's first Labor Secretary, insists in this op-ed that "we have a Republican party, which is careening at high velocity toward authoritarianism. OK, fascism. What occurred in Nashville last week is a frightening reminder of the fragility of American democracy when Republicans obtain supermajorities and no longer need to work with Democratic lawmakers." I read the op-ed from start-to-finish. I didn't find a single mention of Minnesota's DFL legislature and governor passing a bill (that's now law) that gives Minnesota courts the right to ignore other states' court orders about Minnesota 'physicians' performing genital mutilation on pre-teen children. If that isn't the definition of fascism, it doesn't exist. Found in Reich's intemperate diatribe is a mention about "a newly installed Republican supermajority in Florida has given Ro...

The DFL's insatiable tax appetite

Image
The DFL's appetite for raising taxes doesn't stop. With a projected $17,500,000,000 (that's billion) surplus already sitting there, the DFL is still thirsty for more new revenue . The DFL insists that "some increases are needed to fund long-term needs for infrastructure and services, as a chunk of the surplus isn’t ongoing revenue." That's how socialists view government. Because the DFL a) is mostly built on big-government socialism and b) doesn't trust companies making profits, the DFL isn't often interested in incentivizing dynamic profit-making industries. Minnesota has the raw materials and work ethic to be an industrial giant. Instead, they're best known for supporting a behemoth government. It's apparent that the DFL isn't reading the room right. For instance, "Walz acknowledged that Democrats 'have to be careful' not to pass too many increases at once and said leaders still need to sort out priorities among the deluge of...

Why is the DFL pursuing soft-on-crime (think New York) policies

Image
When I watch what's happening here in the Minnesota state legislature, I'm frequently asking 'Why is the DFL pushing such soft-on-crime policies? There's no question that Minneapolis and Minneapolis's suburbs are experiencing a crime wave. When George Floyd was murdered, it triggered a crime wave that's been unprecedented. which says everything in Murderapolis. This article from 2020 says "Jeremiah Ellison responded saying he’s going to neighborhood meetings with the 4th precinct inspector to hear community concerns. He says he does not believe there’s a correlation between calls to defund and the crime wave , but rather the police killing alone is inspiring it." If you think that's insanity, it gets worse. Ron Latz, one of the biggest morons in the Minnesota Senate, is the chief author of SF2909 . One of the bill's provisions says "Whoever assaults another in whole or in substantial part because of the victim's or another's actua...

Joe Biden's war on the automobile industry, fossil fuels and unions

Image
Joe Biden loves touting his support for unions. It's part of his 'Scranton Joe' schtick. Blue Collar Joe is as much a fiction as rainbow-colored unicorns. It's obvious that Scranton Joe is a fictional character because his administration is trying to destroy the fossil fuel industry and the automobile industry. This week, the EPA announced that they want to regulate tailpipe pollutants without getting the proper authorization from Congress. It's suspected that this will get struck down thanks to what's known as the major questions doctrine . The major questions doctrine is the main reason for derailing the Obama administration's "Clean Power Plan" of 2016. The key paragraph of the majority opinion says "This Court stayed the Clean Power Plan in 2016, preventing the rule from taking effect. It was later repealed after a change in Presidential administrations. Specifically, in 2019, EPA found that the Clean Power Plan had exceeded the Agency’s...
