The DFL's insatiable tax appetite
Minnesota has the raw materials and work ethic to be an industrial giant. Instead, they're best known for supporting a behemoth government. It's apparent that the DFL isn't reading the room right. For instance, "Walz acknowledged that Democrats 'have to be careful' not to pass too many increases at once and said leaders still need to sort out priorities among the deluge of competing proposals. But he thinks voters are OK paying more 'if they see what they get [in return] and they feel like it's worth where they're investing.'"
That's breathtakingly foolish. At a time when inflation is high, the people need the money more than government needs the money. Further, there's this:
Competing metro-wide sales tax measures — one from Gov. Tim Walz and another from DFL lawmakers — would use revenue for transit or housing. And a payroll tax increase would fund a new paid family leave program. The DFL has the biggest projected surplus in Minnesota history and they're pushing more tax hikes. That's only part of it. Check this out, then cringe:
[The DFL] would use revenue for transit or housing. The DFL is raising taxes but they don't know what they want to spend the money on. Again, that's the definition of breathtakingly irresponsible. Families need money to prosper. Government doesn't need money to oppress the people. Check this out: Rather than letting people keep their money and incentivize people to make robust profits, the DFL wants people to accept tax hikes to pay for housing. The paid family leave would be paid for with yet another tax hike. Again, this should be the employers' option. A simple tax cut to businesses would create profits that employers could use to add paid family leave to the benefit package. Instead, the DFL would require employers to add this to their benefit package. Not mentioned in the article is the debate over creating a fifth income tax bracket. When I first started paying attention to state politics, Minnesota had 3 tax brackets. I learned from the late Harold Hamilton that 23 states had top tax rates that were lower than Minnesota's bottom tax bracket.
The DFL's appetite for tax hikes is insatiable. It isn't surprising that wealth is fleeing Minnesota like Gov. Walz and the DFL was selling toxic waste. North Dakota, which has a real economy and is run right, and Iowa stand to benefit from the DFL's insatiable appetite for raising taxes.
