Lisa Demuth competes in GOP primary

It's now official. GOP Speaker Lisa Demuth has officially entered the GOP Primary to become Minnesota's next governor. Throughout the campaign, Speaker Demuth maintained that she'd abide by the State Convention's endorsement. That was her intent throughout until the electronic voting devices didn't work. According to this Fox9 article, though, Fox9 reports that "In a statement, Plechash acknowledged that the disruption created confusion among delegates, campaigns and observers, and extended what was already a lengthy process. 'I believe it is appropriate to make clear that any gubernatorial candidate who agreed to abide by the endorsement, should not be treated as bound by that pledge. Those candidates may make their own decision about whether to continue their campaign into the primary. That decision does not change the party's position."

This is the right compromise considering the voting devices malfunctioning. Kendall Qualls got 60.6% of the vote on the 10th ballot. Had he gotten 64%-67% of the vote, then I would've opposed this compromise. The margin after the 10th ballot Saturday is just too thin.

As of tonight, I'm not certain who I'll pick in August. I'm in a win-win situation because I get additional time to study the candidates' agendas, the strength of their running mates and a host of other considerations.

Former GOP activist Michael Brodkorb predicted that the DFL would criticize the GOP if Speaker Demuth reneged on her pledge to abide by the endorsement. That's the easiest prediction Michael's ever made. The DFL Senate passed a bill that settles a lawsuit for wrongfully putting a black man in prison for 15+ years. The House passed the bill, too. Then Gov. Walz signed the bill. The name of the bill is the "Amy Klobuchar mess clean-up Act" because the Hennepin County Attorney's OFfice prosecuted the case. Further, it's apparent that the Demuth-Wilson ticket plans on prosecuting the case against Sen. Klobuchar:

When asked by Speaker Demuth to speak about Sen. Klobuchar's legislative history, Wilson stated "Our goal is to prosecute the case against Amy Klobuchar and how she has sat on the sidelines for 20 years and delivered no large wins for Minnesota. She sat there and was silent on fraud while it was happening and growing and expanding. This isn't just about the taxpayers' dollars. It's about the programs and the people who needed the help."

While I'm pro-Kendall Qualls, I'm also pro-Lisa Demuth-Ryan Wilson. Let both sides make their best pitches between now and the Primary and may the best ticket win.
