Democrats' Virginia redistricting fails

Friday, the Virginia Supreme Court, aka SCOVA, handed Democrats a stinging defeat in their attempt to change their congressional district maps. According to the report, "Democrats were dealt a blow in their efforts to minimize Republican redistricting gains around the US when the Virginia Supreme Court on Friday blocked a voter-approved map that would have flipped as many as four GOP-held US House seats in November’s midterm elections. In a 4-3 decision, the state’s highest court ruled on Friday that the legislature’s process for pursuing the new map violated Virginia’s Constitution and ordered that an earlier version be used in the upcoming midterm elections."

It isn't likely that Virginia will appeal today's ruling since it was based on state law. The U.S. Supreme Court, aka SCOTUS, only rules on federal issues like civil rights or the US Constitution’s equal protection clause. That would give SCOTUS an opening, though the Roberts Court prefers staying out of partisan fights.

Steve Vladeck, a constitutional law professor at Georgetown Law Center, said "I see no formal way to get there, and also no realistic possibility that the court would want to intervene even if it could."

Jay Jones, Virginia's Attorney General, has said that his office is "exploring all options", which is the standard refrain of defeated attorneys. That's a nice quote for the papers if you don't feel like admitting you've lost. Still, Jones has lost.

Each time the Democrats lose a redistricting court fight (think Louisiana, Virginia), think of Hakeem Jeffries getting irate. That's what usually happens. I don't agree with a significant percentage of what Newt Gingrich said in this interview: <>/p>

Still, I think that Republicans should emphasize how crazy Democrats are. These people aren't just liberal. Their thinking is like it's from a different solar system! Guys wandering through teenage girls' bathrooms is CRAZY! Ignoring money fly out the door in Minnesota and California is corruption personified. Finally, it's past time for giving Democrats the benefits of doubts. When they turned antisemitic, they became subhuman.
