BREAKING NEWS: Star Tribune Report Details Shocking Record Of Domestic Abuse from Republican Senate Candidate
I've been told by a loyal reader of this blog who lives in SD-13 that the judge fined Brutger $50 in addition to Brutger pleading guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Further, Kelly Martini had announced her candidacy for Jeff Howe's seat. That means that the BPOU would've done background checks on both candidates. It's difficult to picture the BPOU overlooking felony domestic assault charges. At minimum, the BPOU would've given Brutger a good grilling before approving him for endorsement. I know the people in this BPOU. They have strong diversity standards. A great example of this is Lisa Demuth, the current Speaker of the House. She's proof that the SD-13 BPOU isn't afraid of promoting women or people of color.
Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy repeatedly said that Sen. Nicole Mitchell, the burglar in her caucus who was sentenced to 6 months in prison, deserved due process. Sen. Mitchell got those rights, then was convicted of a felony! She served in the Minnesota Senate for more than a year before getting convicted.
Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy repeatedly said that Sen. Mitchell would serve until her trial. With Mr. Brutger, Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy said this:“This history of abuse is deeply disturbing. Someone with this record doesn’t belong in public office and he shouldn’t be on the ballot. I’m disgusted that the Republicans would recruit someone with that background and they should correct this error immediately. What history? How many abusive spouses are 'one-and-done' types. I'm not saying that Brutger is as pure as the driven snow. I am saying, though, that there appears to be plenty of holes in this story.
It's disturbing to see the Strib run such an ancient article. The arrest happened in 2009! That was Obama's first year in office. The first question I have is simple. Why hasn't Brutger attacked his current wife? (This isn't intended to prove Mr. Brutger's then-fiancee is fabricating this incident. It's intended to ask questions about the incident.) Why did the judge give Mr. Brutger such a modest fine? Why was the charge dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor? Was it because the evidence didn't support the charge? I don't know the answer to those questions but I've got lots of questions.
