Rex Newman's report from grassroots Minnesota

Minnesota is fortunate to have engaged activists. We pride ourselves in making life better. Looking at the legislature, I'd put Speaker Demuth, Floor Leader Niska, Chairman Bakeberg and legislators like Walter Hudson and Bernie Perryman in being great legislators who are making Minnesota better. That being said, it's great having activists like Jeff Johnson and Rex Newman:
Jeff is running for governor while Rex is covering some of the grassroots events. Here's Rex's report from Owatonna's gubernatorial forum:
The Minnesota Steele County Republicans held a gubernatorial candidate forum at the Owatonna Country Club. The nine contenders were (as seated) Phillip Parrish, Jeff Johnson, Lisa Demuth, Brad Kohler, Scott Jensen, Kristin Robbins, Kendall Qualls, Phillip Knight, and John Krhin. It was very well run and attended this cold December 2 evening.

The questioning comprised seven rounds, each starting with a candidate picked at random. Each answer was limited to two minutes, very well enforced. It’s obviously way too early for any detailed analysis. But your guest correspondent did take notes and chose a winner for each round.

Round 1: Opening statements

Winner: Kendall Qualls, for reminding us that the DFL has won every statewide race the past 20 years. "It’s time to win!"

Round 2: How do we keep Minnesotans from leaving?

Winner: Kendall Qualls, who said we must not just keep them. "How do make them WANT to stay?

Round 3: If you could sign two new bills (or change existing laws), what would they be?

Winner: Everyone listed more than two, but Kristin Robbins had the most focused answer. Voter Id, "Never again."

Round 4: How do we raise student test scores?

Winner: Brad Kohler spoke truth to power: "Go to war against woke schools!"

Round 5: What makes you the best candidate?

Winner: There were many good answers, plenty of steak. But if sizzle is the tie-breaker, then Phillip Parrish had the edge.

Round 6: How would you make Minnesota more business friendly?

Winner: Kristin Robbins, again for the most focused answers. Yes, fix the regulations and tax issues, but also fix the "customer service" side.

Round 7: Closing remarks

Winners: Kendall Qualls, who stressed down ballot performance as well. Patrick Knight, who said we need another "Miracle on Ice." And Phillip Parrish, saying its really a Right vs. Wrong contest now.

There was no overall winner, though perhaps some appeared to be not quite yet ready for prime time. It’s a robust set of a capable candidates, any of which would be better than our current Governor Walz. Pick any four for the statewide offices, put the others in the Governor’s cabinet and Minnesota is demonstrably better off.

But going forward, question one remains: who is the most likely to win?

First, I'd like to thank Rex forputting this report together. He drove a long distance to watch the event. Next, let's thank the candidates for traveling great distances to win hearts and minds. This competition will help whoever wins become a strong candidate. We need to defeat Tim Walz or whoever is the DFL picks to be their candidate. Third, we need to vigorously support our candidates up and down the ticket.

This midterm election is a fight between responsible, alert governance and asleep-at-the-switch governance by the DFL. It's just that simple.
