Tom Hauser vs. Pete Stauber, At Issue Edition

It didn't take long to figure out that Tom Hauser wouldn't be a neutral arbiter reporting the news when he interviewed Minnesota Congressman Pete Stauber. The opening question was confrontational, with Hauser asking Rep. Stauber "What proof do you have that the Democrats' motivation for shutting down government is to get free health care for illegals?" Rep. Stauber responded, saying "So the evidence is actually in the text of the Senate bill where they qant to reverse the Working Family Tax Cuts, where it says that we want to verify citizenship for taxpayer-funded health insurance."

Republicans have given that reply for over a week. Democrats know that the proof is found on Page 57 in Section 2141. The text reads "SEC. 2141. REPEAL OF HEALTH SUBTITLE CHANGES.

Subtitle B of title VII of the Act titled "An Act to provide for reconciliation pursuant to title II of H. Con. Res. 14" (Public Law 119–21) is repealed and any law or regulation referred to in such subtitle shall be applied as if such subtitle and the amendments made by such subtitle had not been enacted."

In plain English, that means the One Big Beautiful Bill (Public Law 119-21) "is repealed" and any law or regulation referred to in such subtitle shall be applied as if such subtitle and the amendments made by such subtitle had not been enacted.

That's the proof that Rep. Stauber referenced. Further, listen to the tone in Mr. Hauser's voice. That wasn't the voice of a by-the-book reporter. That was the voice of a hard-nosed prosecutor:

It's long past time for the DFL to stop pretending that this black-and-white proof exists on Speaker Johnson's website. What will the Democrats' next argument be? That proof isn't really proof? That we didn't really see what we just saw? President Reagan once instructed our youth to "not be afraid to see what we saw." That's the right advice.
