Illegal immigration's root cause
The bad new for Harris is that all the optics looked awful. Harris's first international trip as VP might be the worst international trip a VP has taken. Ever. Before she even left DC, Alejandro Giammattei, the Guatemalan president, scolded her.
Hugo Gurdon's op-ed continues that well-deserved scolding:
On her trip, Harris is talking about climate change, among other irrelevancies. Some of those heading north say they’re fleeing hurricanes and drought. But America draws migrants from all over the world now, as it always has, because it is rich and offers free people the opportunity to make a better life. Glossing that over with a modish excuse about climate appeals to the Left, but it’s not a real explanation. Talking about climate change is a way of avoiding doing something immediately effective. Action on climate will make not the slightest difference to illegal immigration in the next year, four years, decade, or perhaps ever.
Anyone mistaking Kamala Harris for a world leader don't belong in the news business. People mistaking Kamala Harris for a world leader might be ok as a gossip reporter for a tabloid but they aren't a serious journalist.
As Gurdon says, talking about root causes helps the VP avoid talking "real causes." The real causes are Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The Trump policies were working. Then Biden scrapped everything with President Trump's name on it. Virtually immediately after that, all hell broke loose. That figures. Harris's trip was so bad that Jen Psaki spent her time deflecting real questions about immigration and the border:
The root causes spin is the Biden administration's way of admitting that this is hurting them politically. It's also admitting that there isn't a way out of this fiasco.
