Aric Putnam's latest unforced mistake

Aric Putnam isn't a top-tier candidate. Supposedly, he isn't the hardest worker on the campaign trail, either. He's got the worst case of Tarryl Clark disease I've ever seen. For those living outside St. Cloud, Tarryl Clark Disease is the worst affliction known to moderate Democrats. It's when so-called moderate Democrats start accumulating a voting record.

Putnam cast THE DECIDING VOTE on every controversial bill the DFL Trifecta legislature passed. Now, he's got a bigger problem. Alpha News is reporting that "A Muslim cleric who issued an antisemitic prayer in 2017 was a featured speaker at the Islamic Center of St. Cloud’s 19th Annual Convention on Saturday. Also speaking at that event was a DFL state senator who represents the St. Cloud area."

According to the translation of Imam Shahin's prayer, Shahin supposedly said "Oh Allah, support the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rest of the Muslim lands. Oh Allah, liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews. Oh Allah, destroy those who closed the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Oh Allah, show us the black day that You inflict upon them, and the wonders of Your ability. Oh Allah, count them one by one and annihilate them down to the very last one. Do not spare any of them.”

Being a featured speaker at the convention this past weekend (on the day after the Eden Prairie Homecoming shootout) isn't good timing. Doing that in a city that's majority Catholic is political malpractice.

Alpha News reached out to Putnam’s office and campaign with questions for this story, but he did not respond to a media inquiry. Putnam will likely need support from St. Cloud’s sizeable Somali Muslim population in order to win reelection. Currently, Democrats have a one-seat majority in the Senate and Putnam’s St. Cloud seat is one of just a few toss-up seats that could tip the Senate to the GOP.
Right now, I figure 3 DFL seats that are likely blue-to-red flips. Similarly, I see the DFL flipping the open seat being created by Warren Limmer's retirement. If things go as I hope and think they will, that'd leave the GOP with a 35-32 seat majority in the Minnesota Senate.

Ads like that will play frequently against Sen. Putnam. That'll make things difficult for him. By comparison, the ads running against Rep. Perryman are rather gentle. Many of the outside group ads for State Sen. Putnam are gentle, as if to hide his voting for letting boys compete in girls' sports or spending the entire surplus or raising taxes after spending the entire projected surplus. That's a voting record worth being ashamed of.
