Why are Democrats opposing school choice for 20,000,000 students?
rhy are Democrat governors expected to run for president opposing school choice? That's the question Glenn Youngkin asked in this NY Post op-ed. Youngkin opened his op-ed by stating "Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, along with just about every other Democratic governor across America, are currently blocking over 20 million students from life-changing education opportunities."
That's an easy answer and the unions know it. The unions aren't in this for the kids. The teachers are but the unions? Not so much. The unions are in this to enrich teachers and their executives. In 2023, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and her executive team made millions:
- $569,012: Randi Weingarten, President, $458,966:
- Federick C Ingram $376,332
- Evelyn DeJesus, EVP $357,174
- Darrin Nedrow, Director of Organization and Field S $354,603
- Jessica Smith, Director, AFT’s Union Leadership Ins $331,292
- Michael S Powell, Asst to President for Communications $330,063
- Tear Jones Murphy, Chief of Staff $319,337(
Despite what Hobbs, Newsom, Pritzker, Moore, Shapiro and their teachers-union friends might say, letting parents decide what educational pathway is best for their kids is not a controversial statement. In fact, it’s popular. According to Democrats for Education Reform, 61% of Democrats — including 63% of black voters and 68% of Hispanic voters — support these commonsense scholarships. At some point, people will notice that Democrats are on the wrong side of another important issue. You can't continue falling on the wrong side of 70%-30% issues. At some point, you must start getting things right. Right now, Democrats must ignore the DSA and start getting things right, especially with scholarships.
