Amy Klobuchar: Tim Walz in a pantsuit

This afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised by a phone call from someone that I hadn't talked to in ages. Before long, just as with the past, we were talking politics, this time focused on St. Amy of Hennepin County, more formally known as Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Since Sen. Klobuchar is running from Washington, DC for governor here in Minnesota, I mentioned that Sen. Klobuchar wasn't that skilled in economic policy. At the state level, you're dealing with the nuts-and-bolts of economic issues, whereas you're dealing with macro economic issues. What does Sen. Klobuchar know about property taxes, license tab fee renewals, school district debt and tax policies?

It took Sen. Klobuchar 3 months to talk about tackling Medicaid fraud. When she talked about fraud, she sought mostly to distance herself from Tim Walz, which is a tacit admission that Gov. Walz got fraud badly wrong! The MN Reformer reported "Anticipating the Walz third-term attack, Klobuchar distanced herself from Walz and released numerous ways she would reshape state government. Because she’s been in Washington, Klobuchar is untouched by the ongoing fraud scandal, but she said she would have taken action immediately when widespread fraud first became apparent."

While Sen. Klobuchar might handle fraud differently, it's highly unlikely that she'd be different than Gov. Walz on taxes (especially property taxes), spending and balancing budgets. That isn't Sen. Klobuchar's style. Trusting Klobuchar to be a reformer on cleaning up a) the Somali fraud problem and the b) the NGO/Nonprofit problem is like trusting an arsonist with a match and some white gas to put out a raging fire. Rep. Kristin Robbins made this report in committee:

I highly recommend, too, bringing back the Oversight Committee, though for a different reason. Without this committee, why think that the DFL will prevent fraud? I have zero confidence in the DFL reigning in Somali Medicaid fraud. That includes Sen. Klobuchar.

It isn't that Sen. Klobuchar would turn a blind eye to Somali fraud for the money. It's because she needs the Somalis' votes.

To be fair with Sen. Klobuchar, she's more politically gifted than Gov. Walz. It's just that Sen. Klobuchar's economic beliefs are virtually the same as Gov. Walz's beliefs. They've both never seen a tax hike they didn't like. I don't think that they've ever voted for a significant tax cut.

Another similarity between the 2 is that neither has shown leadership in big moments or on big issues. This KARE11 report isn't flattering to Gov. Walz:

4 years of 'leadership through paralysis' isn't what we need. We need real leaderahip. We won't get that from Sen. Klobuchar.
