Jackson Purfeerst: unfunded mandates are really property tax hikes

reported A group of Minnesota mayors held a press conference Wednesday to once again urge state government officials to bring change to Minnesota’s finances. The group began as an individual, aka Mayor Purfeerst. Then it grew to 8 mayors from the Brainerd Lakes Area. Then it grew to 241 mayors statewide representing 1,092,129 people. That's about 20% of Minnesota's population.

"We are here today to address two issues that are actively harming every hardworking Minnesotan: rampant fraud that continues to drain public trust and taxpayer dollars, as well as the failed economic direction of our state," said Mayor Jackson Purfeerst of Crosslake.

The DFL's budgeting impact has been gigantic. Since that first letter more mayors have signed onto a different letter:

Additionally, the mayors said they are seeing "businesses struggling to expand, workforce shortages, rising costs, and families choosing to leave Minnesota altogether."

Since that letter was published, more than 250 other mayors have signed it. Further, the mayors’ message was expanded to warn lawmakers that unfunded mandates issued by the state have caused cities to consider property taxes increases. :Every unfunded mandate or cost shift forces us into difficult choices: raise taxes, cut services, delay infrastructure, or stretch thin city staff even further," the letter said.

Mayor Purfeerst didn't pull his punches in this State Capitol news conference:

Literally, I could've highlighted almost every sentence in the early part of Mayor Purfeerst's presentation. His points were that powerful. For instance, Mayor Purfeerst said this:
Accountability has been very slow. Reforms have been reactive. Minnesotans have been left wondering how much more damage will have to be tolerated before real change occurs.
I can't picture Sen. Klobuchar saying that. It's difficult picturing a DFL politician saying something like that. The DFL are talkers. They aren't leaders. Right now, Minnesota needs leaders. Sen. Ted Cruz harshly criticizesMN Democrats throughout this hearing:

The mayors have called for accountability. Instead, they got this.
