Michele Tafoya on Donald Trump's endorsement

If you're wondering if Michele Tafoya wants President Trump's endorsement, the answer is yes. Though she didn't put it this way, the reality is that she needs Trump's base to turn out for her to have a shot at winning Tina Smith's open Senate seat. It's important to stipulate, though, that she'll need to win over independents and sane-thinking Democrats. While sane-thinking Democrats are rare in elected politics, there seems to be plenty of them in normal life. In her interview with the RealClearPolitics Podcaast team, Tafoya showed why she's a formidable opponent for the open Minnesota Senate seat.

During the early discussion of how she'd like the race to go, Michele Tafoya was asked if she wanted Trump's endorsement. She said that, first, people just want sanity. Tafoya said "we think there are lots of paid protesters but there are people who just want sanity."

When asked what her perfect scenario was for getting elected, they asked if winning the endorsement, then watching Lt. Gov. Flanagan duke it out with Rep. Craig, Tafoya immediately replied "We've got a crisis of leadership so we're looking for outsiders. The regular political elite aren't coming to save us. The career politicians who got us to this point -- they're not going to save us." Finally, Minnesota is looking at a political talent. Watch this, then tell me if you agree:

As for Flanagan and Craig beating each other up, that's already happening. That was inevitable, though I don't think they anticipated having to run against a formidable candidate like Michele.

I noticed that the DFL didn't seem interested in talking about running against Tafoya. Javier Morillo came closest to talking on the merits:

Morillo talked mostly about a divided GOP, hinting at an irreparably split GOP on the life issue. Frankly, it sounded more like wishful thinking. Morillo and Nesse DIDN'T talk about Craig or Flanagan. Nesse gushed about Amy Klobuchar being Minnesota's most popular politician. I'd modify her statement just slightly by saying she's the most popular do-nothing politician in Minnesota. That isn't a compliment.

Finally, yes, she'd love winning Trump's endorsement but, frankly, there are other things she needs to accomplish to win this election. It'll be interesting to see if Flanagan or Craig will be willing to debate Tafoya. Tafoya is smart, charismatic and she's easily the best communicator running for office in Minnesota this year. Flanagan and Craig aren't top-tier candidates. I wouldn't be surprised if Flanagan-Craig chicken out on debates.
