Has a populist uprising started in Minnesota?

Like someone lighting a match during the right conditions, a little wildfire is catching fire. In this instance, the firestarter is "Crosslake Mayor Jackson Purfeerst, who is leading the coalition." According to this Alpha News article, "In a Dec. 1 letter, eight mayors representing communities in the Brainerd Lakes Area sounded the alarm on Minnesota’s 'economic decline.' The coalition grew to 98 signatures in a Dec. 22 letter, as the signatories warned that recent property tax spikes 'stem directly from state policies, mandates and cost shifts that leave cities with no choice but to pass these burdens onto homeowners and businesses.'"

Unfunded mandates shouldn't be called that. They're really hidden tax hikes, where the state tell cities, contractors or public schools what to do, then tell cities contractors and schools that they'll have to pay for the mandate themselves. This is utterly flawed in multiple ways.

First, it assumes that the thing mandated is needed. Often, it's the product of a special interest telling the majority party to buy their product. It doesn't have anything to do with need.

Next, the service that's sold is a product that produces profits for the seller without improving the lives of the people paying for it. The lobbyist looks good but the people just have less money without benefitting.

The fact that 8 mayors initially signed the letter isn't that important. The fact that it grew to 98 mayors signing the letter is a positive development. The fact that it's grown to 241 mayors signing the letter is proof that the principles contained in the letter is proof that the mayors aren't impressed with Tim Walz. People don't write letters like that when they're satisfied. Who the DFL picks as their general election candidate is importanmt. If the candidate is seen as yet another bungling technocrat, the people won't be happy. Watch Mayor Purfeerst answer questions during this interview:

The DFL hasn't managed the state well. Now these mayors are mad as hornets. The DFL deserves to be taken to the proverbial cleaners for mismanaging Minnesota. They've been in charge. They just haven't governed wisely.
