Democrats worried about voter registration data
While polls ebb and flow, voter registration figures are more stable. Right now, they're painting a picture that isn't satisfying. The Hill is reporting "The data comes as Democrats struggle to figure out how to get out of the political wilderness after losing the presidency to Donald Trump and control of both chambers of Congress to the GOP."
The voter registration numbers paint a bleak picture but it's puzzling to read "California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has found traction with attacks on Trump, mimicking the president on social media and energizing many in his party." What he's found is ridicule and derision.
Salena Zito is one of the most clear-eyed political reporters around. Here's what she wrote:
One year later, with Newsom’s party struggling, more than many ever expected, he and his party have learned little about what the results of last year’s election meant, what they got wrong, and how they reengage with gettable voters.Democrats have gotten fixated on their base, perhaps because their message doesn't appeal to swing voters. How appealing is socialism/marxism/authoritarianism? Ken Martin hasn't figured things out, either: Democrats haven't figured out what the people want. That's why they're still in the wilderness. Bernie Sanders insists that socialism has become mainstream. That's his goal. It isn't reality, though. Democrats are constantly looking for a new group to energize their party. The latest group that they're latching onto are antisemites. That isn't who Americans are. We aren't socialists and we aren't asntisemitic. It is as though he is viewing America through a cracked mirror: He can’t see who he or what his party is, let alone who the public is, and perhaps more importantly, what the people want in a leader. Having just returned from a 4,000-mile cross-country road trip, during which I visited with voters of all stripes, I can assure you that what Newsom has been doing on social media isn’t it.
We're still a center-right nation most of the time. Until Democrats admit that, they'll continue wandering this political wilderness.
