Nicole Mitchell found guilty of first-degree burglary
The verdicts were predictable because Mitchell's trial included body-camera footage and several witnesses. It also included "statements she made on the morning she was arrested by police."
Some of those statements included "I have never done anything like this," "There were just a couple things of my dad’s I wanted to come get" "I’m clearly not good at this," "I know I did something bad" and "I just wanted to get a couple of my dad’s mementos."
It's been a difficult week for the DFL. It's bad because it ended with the guilty verdict but included federal investigations into potential housing fraud (Medicaid, aka HHS) and potential autism fraud, aka Minnesota Department of Education. At times, Minnesota looks like the state where fraud goes to thrive. After the Mitchell verdict, Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Alex Plechash released the following statement:
Senator Nicole Mitchell has now been convicted of felony burglary — a crime she committed while dressed in black, sneaking into her stepmother’s home with burglary tools. This verdict confirms what Minnesotans have known for over a year: Mitchell is unfit to serve.Later in the statement, Chairman Plechash said this:
If Senator Mitchell does not resign immediately, the DFL Senate must vote to expel her. This is a dark stain on the Minnesota Senate, and a total betrayal of the public trust. It’s time to end this nightmare and restore some basic integrity to government. No one is above the law."If there is a ray of sunshine for the DFL, it's found in Erin Murphy's statement:
Murphy: Sen. Mitchell has told colleagues that she intended to resign if found guilty of this crime and I expect her to follow through on that pledge. This week, the DFL and their NGOs and non-profits were subjected to federal fraud investigations. Then the DFL's weekend started with a DFL senator being convicted of a pair of felonies.
TO THE DFL: HAVE A PLEASANT WEEKEND!
