Donald Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agree to record trade deal
At the press conference announcing the deal, President Trump said that the EU had agreed to purchase $750,000,000,000 worth of U.S. energy. As I said in this article, that won't make Putin happy. That the EU has agreed to buy an unspecified amount of lethal U.S. weaponry won't make Putin happy, either. In this video where van der Leyen and Trump announced the deal, Trump led off the press conference by saying the EU had agreed to purchasinng $750,000,000,000 worth of U.S. energy, which van der Leyen agreed with:
rump said the U.S. and the EU have “had a very good relationship over the years,” but it’s been one-sided and unfair to the U.S. "We have a rough situation," Trump said at the beginning of the briefing. "If we want to sell cars in Europe, we’re not allowed to, and as you know, they sell millions and millions of cars."Talk of 'Trump the isolationist should end with this announcement but it won't end. Democrats don't care about the truth so this deal is essentially irrelevant. The WSJ cares about the truth but they're old-fashioned economic thinkers so they'll have a difficult time letting go of their past statements.Von der Leyen acknowledged the one-sidedness of the current relationship between the U.S. and EU. "We have a surplus. The United States has a deficit, and we have to rebalance it," she said. "We have an excellent trade relation. It’s a huge volume of trade that we have together, so we will make it more sustainable."
The other big thing about this deal is that the EU's market is now open for U.S.-manufactured automobiles. That's got to put a ear-to-ear grin on the UAW's face.
I didn't know how things would fall into place but I figured things would get worked out. The U.S. has the biggest market in the world and President Trump's the best closer in history. All the other countries want access to that market. Actually, they need to sell their products in the U.S. to have a healthy economy. That put Trump in position to make these demands.
Finally, Democrats made a habit of accusing Trump creating chaos on the world stage. The Democrats' chief trade talking point just got vaporized. The next interesting thing for the Democrats is seeing how they expllain away the coming Trump Boom.
