Matt Gaetz withdraws his AG nomination

Throughout his uphill fight to become President Trump's Attorney General, Matt Gaetz has fought for his political life. This afternoon, Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration for that position. NBC is reporting "Gaetz's path was mired by a series of allegations of sexual misconduct, including sex with a minor at a 2017 party. On Thursday, NBC News learned from a source familiar that the House Ethics Committee, which had been investigating Gaetz, was told that a 17-year-old girl had two sexual encounters with the then-congressman at the party."

Gaetz made lots of enemies in his time on Capitol Hill from both sides of the aisle. He's considered the opposite of Marco Rubio. Rubio is considered a safe pick and highly overqualified to be President Trump's top diplomat.

Other nominees in that safe category would be Linda McMahon, nominated to be Trump's Education Secretary, Elise Stefanik, nominated to be the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., and Howard Lutnick, Trump's pick for Commerce Secretary.

NBC is also reporting this:
The description of the second encounter was included in her testimony to the House Ethics Committee as well as a deposition in a related civil lawsuit. The second sexual encounter included another adult woman, according to a source familiar.
To go forward with these confirmation hearings would've presented the incoming Trump administration with another distraction. This eliminates that distraction.

Matt Gaetz didn't make any friends in Congress. Simply put, he was a bombthrower. He didn't make friends when he sabotaged Kevin McCarthy's speakership. That likely didn't help Gaetz in the Senate, where collegiality is appreciated.
