David McCormick's defeat of Bob Casey is official

In a year full of great news for Republicans, Steve Daines got another bit of good news when the AP reported that David McCormick had defeated Bob Casey in Pennsylvania. At a minimum, that gives Republicans a 53-seat majority in the Senate starting in January. That means President-Elect Trump will get his entire cabinet confirmed in a timely fashion. That's the first big step in each presidential administration. Getting his first choice for each Cabinet position is a big deal because personnel is policy.

Next, Sen.-Elect McCormick's victory gives the incoming majority leader room to maneuver when it comes to using reconciliation to extend Trump's tax cuts. It also gives the next majority leader room to lose a member or 2 when they pass the budget. That initial budget will include Elon Musk's budget restructuring, funding for Trump's border wall and the recision of unspent money from a) the infrastructure bill and b) the Inflation Reduction Act. Using the unused money from the IRA can be used as a pay-for for hiring additional border patrol agents and paying for part, if not all, of Trump's border wall.

These thing will help pay for most of the big-ticket items of Trump's second term. If that sounds like the to-do list of a lame duck president to you, you haven't paid attention to presidents' second terms.

After getting the good news of his victory, Sen.-Elect McCormick was interviewed by Laura Ingraham:

Passing Elon Musk's budget restructuring will help change the budget baseline. Coupled with the additional revenues from a booming economy, at a minimum, will bring about significant deficit reduction. Depending on the amount of budget restructuring passed, debt reduction might be possible. Not having to deal with lifting the debt ceiling every year would eliminate another deadline to meet.

One of the first things Sen.-Elect McCormick should do is send President-Elect Trump a gift certificate to McDonalds. It's always smart to get on the boss's good side. I've heard he likes everything they make but he especially likes their fries.

UPDATE: The McCormick-Casey race isn't the only race called Thursday. They also called the final 2 states, Arizona and Nevada, bringing the Trump-Vance electoral vote total to 312, compared with the Harris-Walz total of 226.
