Fox News, Tucker Carlson part ways
While most of the articles covering Carlson's departure describe this as a huge loss for FNC, it'd be foolish not to mention that Carlson had some mighty big shoes to fill when he replaced Bill O'Reilly. The O'Reilly Factor was the top-rated show on cable news for 10+ years. That isn't to say that Carlson will be easily replace or that FNC will continue without missing a beat. That's living in La-La Land.
This is Faulkner's announcement:
If I had to guess, I'm betting on Lawrence Jones eventually succeeding Carlson. That's purely speculation on my part but it makes tons of sense. First, LJ is a rising star at FNC. They've been grooming him for something bigger since giving him his own show on Saturday nights. Next, he's a talented diversity hire, something that can't be said about Don Lemon. Lemon's appeal is limited at best. LJ's appeal is farther-reaching. Third, he has the talent to pull in a diverse audience. He's covered everything from crime, the Southern border, Chicago's downfall, various trials and other breaking news events. It isn't a stretch to think this went into FNC's decision. Unlike liberals, FNC dooesn't jump without first having a back-up plan. LJ's promotion fits nicely, too, with FNC's new plan to promote talented minorities. Harris Faulkner was first. She's turned into a rock star. If LJ is the next minority hire, it'll be on the merits, not identity politics considerations. Meritocracy should always defeat identity politics.
