Democrats search for border solutions

According to White House spokesperson Ian Sams, Kevin McCarthy's visit to the U.S.-Mexico border was a "publicity stunt." Sams refused to characterize Hakeem Jeffries' trip to the border in either a positive or negative light, proving that Sams is just another dime-a-dozen political hatchetman.

A day earlier, Sams said of McCarthy's co-del as "House Republicans should spend less time on partisan publicity stunts and more time working on solutions. Solutions are what President Biden is focused on, and his is plan working. House Republicans would be wise to join him to work together to strengthen our immigration system and fund border security."

To quote Col. Potter from MASH, "Buffalo Bagels!" Joe Biden isn't interested in solving the border crisis. In FY2020, 460,000 illegal immigrants crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. In FY2021, the first year of Biden's administration, almost 1,740,000 illegal immigrants crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. In FY2022, that figure jumped to 2,400,000. Does that sound like Biden's policies are heading towards a solution? Let's get serious.

Ahead of the Democratic House members' trip to the border, Cuellar, who represents a border district and has been critical of the Biden administration's border policies, said he encouraged colleagues to visit the area in order to understand the situation. "It’s important that members visit the border and try to get an objective understanding of the border," Cuellar told Fox News on Thursday.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., visited the border area in Cochise County, Arizona, Thursday, joined by freshman Reps. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz., Lori Chavez-DeRemer, R-Ore., Jen Kiggans, R-Va., and Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis.

Does this sound like a publicity stunt?

Before you put a policy together, you have to talk with local experts. Speaker McCarthy's co-del did exactly that. Democrats will return to Washington, DC, and preach of the necessity for comprehensive immigration reform. As I wrote here, comprehensive immigration reform is a myth.

There are 2 things happening here. The highest priority is to fix the crisis. That requires finishing the border wall before anything else. Next, it requires beefing up the border patrol, the DEA and ICE. Coupled with that is the consistent enforcing of border laws, including deporting all illegal immigrants immediately. Catch and Release is just a euphemism for not enforcing the law.

Next, we can fix our visa laws, green cards and asylum laws. Those are problems, not crises.

Finally, let's address the elephant in the room that hasn't been addressed. It's called Simpson-Mazzoli. Republicans agreed to granting amnesty in exchange for border security. Democrats reneged on funding border security. Since then, Republicans haven't trusted Democrats. I can't blame them for that. Since Democrats broke their promise, they should meet us more than half way. They should accept the GOP plan to fix the crisis. That's the only way this works. Nibbling at the problem won't cut it. That's just Simpson-Mazzoli 2.0.
