The Democrats' commonsense crisis
The Democrats' credibility crisis started early in the Biden administration. Specifically, it started with the failed evacuation from Afghanistan. After that, Biden's credibility dropped further when he gave Putin a list of places he didn't want Russia to hit. Finally, the Democrats' credibility crisis grew further when Biden practically invited Putin to invade Ukraine:
Most of the Democrats' problems are self-imposed. Letting Biden win started the momentum rolling. Instead of letting all candidates duke it out, President Obama had James Clyburn annoint Biden as the pastron saint of black Democrats. After that, everyone knew that the fix was in. Rather than letting Democrat voters pick their president, the DNC powers-that-be picked Biden and Harris. A short 4 years later, Democrats picked Harris after Biden had the worst debate performance in U.S. presidential history. This exchange essentially ended Biden's political career:The party has seen its support erode with white men, Hispanic men and working-class voters across the board, with approval ratings sitting below 35 percent across those demographics. And enthusiasm within the party continues to wane in the wake of 2024, the poll revealed. The thing that the GOP has going for it is that the GOP has something appealing to sell. Specifically, they get to sell the biggest tax cut in U.S. history, the most secure border in U.S. history and inflation that's under control. Finally, the GOP can tout ending the end of Iran's nuclear program. If Democrats toutthe end or Iran's nuclear program, that'll lead to Democrats losing the open Senate seat in Michigan. Further, Democrats can't tout that because they can't asfford to lose their antisemitic base."This is the reality of the perception of us as a party, and until we accept that, it’s going to be hard to move forward," said Democratic strategist Rodell Mollineau, who serves as senior adviser to the super PAC. "There’s a perception out there, outside of Democratic elites, and it’s taken hold in not just the MAGA crowd but people that should be with us."
Democrats have been searching for a way out of the wilderness since their devastating loss in November, when they not only lost the presidency once again to President Trump but also the House and Senate. Since then, party officials have conducted a number of postmortems — including polls, focus groups and strategy sessions — as part of the party’s rebuilding effort. That isn't surprising. President Trump is winning at home, winning at the border and winning on the world stage. Other than that, he's off to a sluggish start. But Democrats are still feeling dejected and rudderless in the early months of the Trump presidency. An AP-NORC poll out in May revealed that only 35 percent of surveyed Democrats are optimistic about the party’s future, compared with 57 percent in July 2024. And there is an overwhelming sense that the party lacks strong leaders, the same poll showed.
Especially over the past week+, Democrats have threatened ICE agents. I don't know which idiot thought that was the right strategy but they shouldn't be kept on the payroll.
