Dan Wolgamott's weekly spin
I’m happy to share that we just wrapped up our first week of committee hearings in the Minnesota House - thanks to the bipartisan power-sharing agreement my DFL colleagues and I were able to secure! That's world-class spin! The power-sharing agreement that's now in place is different than the initial one proposed makes Lisa Demuth the Speaker for the next 2 years. The other major difference is the creation of the new Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Policy Committee. That committee will have a 5-3 permanent GOP majority for the full 2-year session.I’m as frustrated as you that it took this long, especially since the deal House Republicans agreed to is largely the same as the offer we made before session began in January, but all’s well that ends well, and it’s time to turn the page on the last few weeks and work together to deliver bipartisan results for Minnesotans.
Those are pretty significant differences compared with the initial DFL proposal. The DFL was initially happy to hang out in coffee shops and diners while ignoring their legislative responsibilities. The DFL even was happy to get paid for not working. That's why they hired a retired judge to swear them in privately and secretly before the session started. The last thing the DFL wanted was to get sworn in on Jan. 14, 2025.
That would've established a quorum, which would've meant that the DFL wouldn't have gotten a 3-week paid vacation to start the session. Contrary to Wolgamott's constituent update, the reality is that the DFL tried bulllying the GOP into a bad deal. To their credit, Republicans stood their ground:
The DFL hid from their legislative and oversight responsibilities. As a result of their irresponsibilities, the GOP now has the upper hand in budget negotiations. There's no spinning that, Dan. There's only that reality.
