The Democrats' Mayorkas impeachment PR stunt strategy
These days, NYC and Chicago are begging for mercy. Today, the PR stunt is being taken seriously. Cities' budgets are getting overwhelmed. (Imagine that!) After House Republicans voted last night to impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas, DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg released a statement.
It said "House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border. While Secretary Mayorkas was helping a group of Republican and Democratic Senators develop bipartisan solutions to strengthen border security and get needed resources for enforcement, House Republicans have wasted months with this baseless, unconstitutional impeachment."
Let's rewrite that so it's truthful Then it would say "House Republicans will be remembered by history for holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable for neglecting his responsibility of enforcing this nation's immigration laws. While Secretary Mayorkas was helping a group of Uniparty senators put together a bipartisan amnesty bill, House Republicans wrote, then passed HR2, a serious border security bill."
There's nothing unserious or unconstitutional about impeaching a cabinet secretary who won't consistently enforce this nation's immigration laws. That's why they're called laws. That's why they aren't called suggestions. The Biden administration chimed in, too:
History will not look kindly on House Republicans for their blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship that has targeted an honorable public servant in order to play petty political games. Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, a Cuban immigrant who came to the United States with his family as political refugees, has spent more than two decades serving America with integrity in a decorated career in law enforcement and public service. From his time in the Justice Department as a U.S. Attorney to his service as Deputy Secretary and now Secretary of Homeland Security, he has upheld the rule of law faithfully and has demonstrated a deep commitment to the values that make our nation great. The last time Republicans played a political stunt with illegal immigration, they forced sanctuary cities to deal with Biden's open borders and all that comes with it. I'd say it's been quite successful in spreading the torment around. To those sanctuary cities that insist on virtue-signaling, the Abbott Plan is forcing you to be virtuous. This time, it isn't just a game: Enforcing laws is legitimate work. Passing laws is only part of the fight. The Biden administration thinks that they can ignore the laws they don't like. This time, it's returned to bite the Democrats in their butts. It serves them right. This impeachment already failed once on a bipartisan vote. Instead of staging political stunts like this, Republicans with genuine concerns about the border should want Congress to deliver more border resources and stronger border security. Sadly, the same Republicans pushing this baseless impeachment are rejecting bipartisan plans Secretary Mayorkas and others in my administration have worked hard on to strengthen border security at this very moment — reversing from years of their own demands to pass stronger border bills. Giving up on real solutions right when they are needed most in order to play politics is not what the American people expect from their leaders. Congress needs to act to give me, Secretary Mayorkas, and my administration the tools and resources needed to address the situation at the border. The House also needs to pass the Senate’s national security supplemental right away. We will continue pursuing real solutions to the challenges Americans face, and House Republicans have to decide whether to join us to solve the problem or keep playing politics with the border.
