Joe Biden's Texas PR stunt, Donald Trump's border security visit
While there, Biden's expected to criticize House Republicans for being unwilling to pass the so-called Bipartisan Border Security Bill. That bill has more loopholes in it than Swiss Cheese has holes in it. It has tons of poison pills in it, too.
CBS is reporting "Mr. Biden will visit Brownsville, Texas, to meet with Border Patrol agents, law enforcement and local leaders as he puts pressure on Republicans to take up a bipartisan deal on border security provisions, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Monday." Congratulations, Joe, for actually visiting the border. Let's see if he's willing to make major policy changes while on the trip. I'm betting he'll stick with the same failed policies that's helped his administration set the record for illegal border crossings 3 straight years.
In FY2020, Trump's final year in office, 458,000 illegal aliens illegally crossed the border. In FY2021, Biden's first year in office, 1,734,000 illegal aliens illegally crossed the border. At that point, that set the record for illegal border crossings. In FY2022, Biden smashed his record established in FY2021 when 2,370,000 illegal aliens illegally crossed the border. In FY2023, Biden set the new record for illegal border crossings for the third straight year. In FY2023, 2,475,000 illegal aliens crossed the border.
If Biden was serious about securing the border, why didn't he change his policies in July, 2022. It isn't like it wasn't obvious that illegal crossings were setting records by then. It's obvious that these policies were having the intended effect.
Now that it's a major political liability, it's suddenly a priority? It isn't a coincidence that Biden's visit happens a week after the murder of Laken Riley while she jogged on the UGA campus. If we had a president who took this issue seriously, which we don't, Gov. Kemp wouldn't have had to take all of these questions:
CBS BiasBut Republicans failure to pass the bipartisan border security deal that took months to negotiate and included many of the concessions that the GOP has demanded for years has given Democrats an opportunity to go on offense. Senate Republicans killed the deal after Trump announced his opposition. Democrats have accused Republicans of posturing instead of working toward solutions to the border crisis.Let's be clear about this. That bipartisan border bill is a joke. It has some decent provisions in it but it's also famous for taking a step forward, then a step sideways, then half-a-step backwards. HR2 is a complete border security bill that would pass overwhelmingly if citizens were voting on it rather than partisan politicians.
Finally, let's stipulate that the Senate bill was watered down by Mitch McConnell. It was getting rejected by most rank-and-file Republicans. It's time for Mitch to go from leadership.
