Joe Biden visits East Palestine

Now that Joe has visited East Palestine as often as he's visited El Paso and VP Harris has sorta visited the border, he can take another vacation. Last year, Joe took 140 days of vacation, including his vacation at Tom Steyer's mansion on Lake Tahoe and his Thanksgiving at a Nantucket mansion. Thank goodness that Joe's a man of the people, a regular Scranton Joe.

If there was a theme for the day, it was that Biden's visit was too little too late. That theme kept popping up wherever Biden went. I can't imagine the frustration that the people living in East Palestine felt when Biden announced "Today, I'm announcing the award of 6 National Institutes of Health grants to some of America's best research universities to study the short- and long-term impacts of what happened here."

ABC is reporting "Biden praised the town for its 'herculean efforts' in the wake of the tragedy and pledged to continue to support residents." Then he added "I want them to understand that we're not going home, no matter what, until this job is done and it's not done yet. There's a lot more to do. The vast majority's been done but we're going to stay until the very end until every need is met." That's a pile of BS. This is a more accurate report:

Biden faced intense scrutiny for not going to the Ohio-Pennsylvania border town in the immediate aftermath of the derailment. Upon his arrival in East Palestine, Biden was met with some signs that read, "Go home, sleepy Joe" and others requesting he "declare the emergency," according to reporters traveling with the president.
East Palestine is Trump Country:
Former President Donald Trump toured the area just weeks after the incident. He was flanked by East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway and local first responders as he distributed water and supplies. Trump had already announced he was running for the White House again and throughout the trip sought to paint Biden as ineffective in responding to the crisis.

"Unfortunately, as you know, your goodness and perseverance were met with indifference and betrayal in some cases," Trump told residents. Trump earlier this week again took aim at Biden, writing on his conservative social media platform: "Biden should have gone there a long time ago -- for him to go now is an insult to those who live and work in East Palestine."

The residents of East Palestine (pronounced Pal-e-steen) needed a full-throated response from the federal government and from Norfolk Southern (the railroad company). They haven't gotten that. Buttigieg has been largely invisible. The biggest news he made was about the shoes he wore to the site. While the workers wore work boots at the clean-up site, Buttigieg wore dress shoes:

Joe Biden's announcement that he was awarding grants to do research on the effects of these chemicals is underwhelming. People are getting sick from these chemicals. Some of these homes are essentially uninhabitable ever again. They need major announcements about low- or no-interest loans or help with navigating the federal bureaucracy.

There should be a major federal footprint in or near the clean-up site. There should be a hotline established to handle these things. Most importantly, Biden should've visited the site 2-3 times, including a time shortly after the crash.

The essential message to send is that 'we're all in this together.' By waiting 378 days from crash-to-visit, Biden sent the message that 'good luck with the clean-up. You're in this alone.' That's the opposite of leadership.
