Ron DeSantis pressures Nikki Haley on New Hampshire debates

Apparently, the "surging" Nikki Haley isn't willing to debate Gov. Ron DeSantis. Haley's excuse is that she won't debate again unless it's with "either ... Donald Trump or with Joe Biden. I look forward to it." Ron DeSantis isn't letting Haley off the hook, though, saying in this tweet that "Nikki Haley is afraid to debate because she doesn’t want to answer the tough questions such as how she got rich off Boeing after giving them millions in taxpayer handouts as governor of South Carolina."

While there's little doubt Haley doesn't want to debate Gov. DeSantis, she might determine that there's a long-term benefit to her campaign even though she'll certainly take a short-term hit for skipping the WMUR debate. Let's remember that she got solidly defeated by Gov. DeSantis in the CNN debate.

Haley is putting out her best spin trying to convince people that it's now a 2-person race:

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley finished third in Iowa, far behind former President Donald Trump, but her message looking ahead to New Hampshire is the Republican primary is now a two-person contest.

Her bold claim comes after Haley earned 21,085 caucus votes, or 19.7%, putting her behind second-place finisher Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had 23,420 votes, or 21.2%. Trump trounced all of his challengers, winning an outright majority (51%) with 56,260 votes in a historic caucus victory that resoundingly confirmed his frontrunner status.

First, finishing third dampens the 'Haley surge' spin published by news/spin outlets like the WSJ and Fox News. This is how Haley tried spinning Monday's results:

Here's Gov. DeSantis' full tweet criticizing Haley: The Des Moine Register Poll showed that Haley's problem is that 43% of her voters wouldn't have a problem voting for Biden. That's fine if you're running for the Democrat nomination but it's a kiss of death if you're running for the GOP nomination. When the primaries hit the states where it's Republican voters only, it won't be surprising if the Haley Surge ends.

Gov. DeSantis needs to keep pressing forward because it's apparent that Trump knows that he can't debate DeSantis. If they went-head-to-head, Trump would lose decisively because DeSantis is more polished policywise and because Trump would have to explain his failures in draining the Swamp and with COVID.
