Identifying tonight's Reagan

It's time to admit that Trumpist populism isn't the best path forward for the GOP. Further, let's admit that embracing the GOP establishment's policies are worse than Trump's populism. What's isn't getting talked about is Reaganite anti-establishment thinking. Let's remember that Reagan's 'squeaker' came in 1980. That's when he won 'just' 489 electoral votes against the 1980s equivalent of Joe Biden.

In the only presidential debate in 1980, Reagan said something that resonated with the American people when he said "A recession is when your neighbor loses his job, a depression is when you lose your job and the recovery starts when Jimmy Carter loses his job."

These days, Republicans think that President Reagan's beliefs are outdated. Donald Trump thinks that the Reaganite policy of calling out evil makes negotiation difficult. That's somewhat true but Reagan didn't  hesitate to tell Gorbachev to "Tear down this wall."

The person on that stage tonight that best personifies President Reagan's optimism, mastery of policy and President Reagan's cheerfulness will win tonight's debate going away. This is Reaganite optimism at its finest:

A longtime and dear friend of mine taught me what I consider the secret to President Reagan's success. I was taught that the underlying principles undergirding President Reagan's policies this set of principles: If it doesn't make you more prosperous, more safe or more free, then it isn't a high priority item. When President Reagan spoke about the Soviets, he spoke about their evil empire:

I don't want someone who will say anything to get the upper hand in negotiations. I want someone with the moral clarity of President Reagan. Reaganite foreign policy toppled the Soviet Union without firing a shot. Rather, President Reagan confronted the Soviets wherever they tried expanding their sphere of influence.

If he was president today, Reagan would've shipped enough arms to Ukraine to obliterate Putin's military with the greatest dispatch. Biden's policies would've been rejected immediately. Trump's policies of negotiating with Putin would've been hastily rejected, too.

Reagan's policy would've been to get enough arms into Ukrainian hands as fast as possible so that an endless war wouldn't have been possible. Overwhelming supplies of armaments would've overwhelmed Putin while securing Ukraine for a generation+.

We need a Reaganite on stage tonight. If that candidate steps forward, Trump and Biden will be in deep trouble.
