Ron DeSantis vs. Donald Trump, President Reagan edition

Before starting with the article, I'll just thank Ed Morrissey for hiring David Strom as a writer for HotAir. On Thursday, David wrote this great article about Donald Trump's disgusting behavior just prior to and during the hurricane. David didn't pull punches, which I appreciate, when he opened the article by saying "Trump’s superpower is his outspoken aggressiveness, and his kryptonite is his petty self-centeredness. Unfortunately, he married the two during Hurricane Idalia and behaved like an ass."

Later in the article, David wrote "Starting a couple of days ago it was rumored that Trump sent out the word that he didn’t want any of his supporters to do anything that might make DeSantis look good–including sharing public announcements about the storm. I didn’t bother to write about it because it may have been propaganda to make Trump look bad, although subsequent searches of Trump’s followers showed that even Trump’s Florida-based influencers were remarkably silent about the storm as it crashed into the state. It sure looks like Trump sent out the word to stay quiet. But perhaps they decided to do this on their own."

It's time to compare these presidential candidates with the greatest president of the past 50 years. His name is Ronald Reagan. Let's start with President Reagan's Eleventh Commandment, where Republicans don't speak ill of other Republicans. Thus far, Ron DeSantis hasn't done anything except prepare Floridians for Hurricane Idalia, prepare the power companies to restore power as fast as possible and give Floridians instructions to protect themselves and their families.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to tell his minions this:

"So now it is learned that Governor Ron DeSanctimonious unnecessarily approved a 20% hike in Florida Electricity Rates, the largest in history (by far!), after taking a 9.5 Million Dollar Campaign Contribution from “money machine” Florida Power and Light, and subsidiaries," began Trump on Truth Social Thursday morning. "Next up to check out is the Insurance Industry, where DeSanctus gave up the store. His campaign and poll numbers have ‘CRASHED’ to a point where it doesn’t much matter anymore, but what a shame for Florida!"
Rather than Trump offering comfort or optimism, Trump offered pitchforks for his political opponent. Meanwhile, this is how Gov. DeSantis responded to Hurricane Idalia:

Ronald Reagan once famously said "It's amazing how much you can get done when you don't care who gets credit for what." In other words, it's amazing what a team can accomplish when they work as a team. Gov. DeSantis worked with the various units for the good of all Floridians while Trump pumped up the vitriol. I don't have to ask which man most resembles President Reagan, aka the Happy Warrior. The difference is painfully obvious.

Let's notice that Gov. DeSantis united Floridians while Trump divided Republicans. The facts speak for themselves. Do we want a president that's worked hard to unite Floridians? Would we rather have a president who's spread vitriol against Republicans for the past month?

Trump is the guy who said that Andrew Cuomo did a better job with COVID than Gov. DeSantis did in Florida. Trump is the guy who said that Rick Scott and Charlie Crist did a better job than Gov. DeSantis. The people said otherwise, electing Gov. DeSantis by the biggest margin in Florida GOP history.

I remember when Donald Trump listened to the people. That Donald Trump disappeared right after Trump lost in 2020. Since then, he's been a bitter man who hasn't looked forward.

I can't wait to elect a new Happy Warrior in the mold of Ronald Reagan. I'm not saying that Gov. DeSantis is the next Reagan. I'm just saying that we can count on him to not trash other Republicans, get lots of important things done with the economy and in our schools, then secure this nation. With Trump, the only thing I'm confident of is that he's a narcissist who's in it for himself.

    I would be happy with DeSantis based on policy, or with a Trump return on POLICY. My concerning difference between the two is which one is the "nice guy" who will leave too much of the Deep State in place, and who will strike as an avenging angel at all those who persecuted him. A happy medium would be highly desirable, if we could get it.

    In terms of the Swamp, I'd be more worried about Trump, though not because he doesn't want to fix the problem. The thing I like about DeSantis is that he's already got 2 super-serious guys working on "breaking the Swamp", aka Chip Roy & Thomas Massie. They're already putting a plan together

    Further, DeSantis wants to move FBI HQ to Huntsville, AL, where there's already an FBI HQ.

    Agreed. I'm sure Trump had no idea, in his first term, the depth and perfidy of the Deep State. And now that he knows where it is, he may spend too much time draining the Swamp and not enough building the Progress Overpass over it. I had forgotten about Roy and Massie. I do know Heritage is putting together a complete new administration to hand to the GOP President on Day 1.

Yesterday, Maria Bartiromo interrogated Gov. Ron DeSantis on Sunday Morning Futures. The first half of the interview, Bartiromo asked policy questions. Gov. DeSantis showed his understanding of the issues and presented his solutions on everything from China, inflation and growing the economy. The first reply he had was to cut spending. His next reply was to open energy production. Third, he talked about the importance of increasing productivity, which he correctly said is the best way to eliminate inflation.
