As I was leaving my man cave to spend time with my wife the phone rang. Blogger Gary Gross was calling. I answered the call and Gary asked me to select one of the 16 Parental Rights articulated in a recently released document to provide the reason the right was included in the list of “Parental Bill of Rights” (insert link to the document). When my wife laid down for a nap, I checked my email and the first article published in today’s daily Alpha News gave me evidence which support including right number 4 (full disclosure of all information regarding their child including all official and unofficial school records. School personnel will not willfully conceal information or events from the child’s parent unless a unique legal circumstance exists such as a “no contact” order issued by a judge is in effect.)
The headline of the Alpha News article reads: Police: Robbinsdale school officials ‘hampered’ investigation into gun incident. The subtitle reads: Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green said the investigation was initially hampered by a lack of cooperation and information from school officials. These excerpts, with my use of bold, from the article provide clear evidence for including Right 4.
Under the byline Crime Watch News Alpha News wrote: Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green said the investigation was initially hampered by a lack of cooperation and information. “Robbinsdale school officials took five days before they notified our department, then refused to turn over the Snapchat video, stating we would need a search warrant even though the video wasn’t on school property but on a student cellphone stated and posted on Snapchat,” explained Green. Alpha News went on to report that: The Robbinsdale school district previously apologized in a statement after parents raised concerns upon learning that school officials knew about the incident but didn’t notify parents.
In a November 26, 2022 article, Alpha News reported: Hackles were raised by parents early last week when it was learned that administrators at Sandburg Middle School knew of a video circulating on Nov. 11 that allegedly showed a student holding what appeared to be a gun in a bathroom at the school but didn’t notify police or parents. Alpha News also reported that the school board chair in a release to the district the chair stated that … "we apologize for the anxiety this entire situation caused for so many."
Thankfully anxiety was all that occurred as a result of failure to report the incidents. If the school district had recognized the parental right for full disclosure no apology would have been necessary and full cooperation with the police could have been reported which may have reduced the anxiety being felt by parents and students. By articulating Right 4 our team of writers believe schools will be a better place for all.
