Is the Freedom Caucus interested in accountability or stupidity?
Right now, the Freedom Caucus is insisting on this provision to provide accountability. That's dishonest in the extreme. This won't provide accountability. It'll produce hesitation and instability. Essentially, it'll mean that the Freedom Caucus will have veto power over the Speakership until the 2024 election. If Kevin McCarthy doesn't do what the Freedom Caucus wants, they can head to the House floor and terminate his speakership.
The Freedom Caucus would be wise to consult with the Declaration of Independence. Specifically, they should pay attention to the part of the Declaration where it says "Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes." Can I get an "Amen" and a "Hallelujah" for that foundational principle? Speakers shouldn't be evicted over policy differences. Only when a speaker is corrupt should they be removed.
I can certainly picture Matt Gaetz making a motion to vacate. It isn't difficult to picture a Democrat providing a second to that motion. What part of that possibility sounds like it'd provide accountability and stability?
I'm a big fan of Lauren Boebert but I disagree with her on this:
There's a ton of GOP stupidity running free in Washington, DC. There's a noticeable absence of testosterone, aka cajones, in Washington, DC. It's time for Senate Republicans to grow a pair. It's time for the Freedom Caucus to find a brain. A leadership team of 222 'leaders' isn't wise.I don't doubt that Andy Biggs and Chip Roy have the best of intentions. It's just time for them to pull their heads out of their behinds.
