Why debates are important
Whenever Ryan accused Vance of holding a position, Vance replied with proof that Ryan was stretching the truth. That's entirely different than Katie Hobbs walking onto stage, then accusing Kari Lake of believing in things she doesn't believe. In a debate, Lake would quickly have the opportunity to refute Hobbs's accusations.
When candidates have the opportunity to accuse their opponent of something dastardly-sounding, they can make anyone sound despicable. Think of it like calling a witness without the benefit of cross-examination. Anyone can sound compelling reading a prepared statement written by a professional speech writer. (The exceptions to that are Joe Biden and John Fetterman.) That same speech sounds different, though, when a skilled prosecutor starts asking questions. This is proof that Fetterman can't read a prepared statement:

Democrats know they're selling Spam sandwiches to people used to dining on filet mignon or a medium rare ribeye. The Democrats' accomplishments aren't nonexistent but they aren't impressive, either. Factor in sky-high inflation, rampaging crime and an open Tex-Mex border and Democrats are left with selling Spam sandwiches for a message.
Sean Patrick Maloney insists that Democrats have a mainstream message to pitch to people. Does this sound like a mainstream message?
That sounds more like a Fetterman/Harris word salad than a mainstream message. That's why a red wave is gaining momentum again. It isn't surprising that Democrats don't want to debate. Their policies evade the mainstream by a country mile. Their 'messengers' (think John Fetterman) haven't visited Realityville in months.
