Manchin: Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will make Democrats walk plank

In a stunning admission, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin made a veiled hint that Joe's climate change bill will force vulnerable Democrat senators to walk the political plank. Manchin is quoted as saying that "From here forward, the debate over a future reconciliation bill or any targeted legislation must focus on supporting the everyday hardworking Americans we have been elected to serve. I support the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 because it provides a responsible path forward that is laser focused on solving our nation’s major economic, energy and climate problems. The question for my colleagues is whether they are willing to put their election politics aside and embrace the commonsense approach that the overwhelming majority of the American people support and will best serve the future of this nation." TRANSLATION: The question is whether Democrats are willing to walk the plank this November for the greater good of virtue-signaling and saving our planet.

The official name of the bill is the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. I've nicknamed the bill 'the Manchin Walk the Plank Act '. Sen. Manchin's quote seems to suggest that he knows that several Democrat senators will have to choose between voting against his bill or getting defeated this November. Among those senators are Sen. Masto of Nevada, Sen. Kelly of Arizona, Sen. Bennet of Colorado, Sen. Warnock of Georgia and Sen. Hassan of New Hampshire.

It's obvious that Sen. Manchin is on the wrong track. Pramila Jayapal is rallying to Sen. Manchin's side after criticizing him a week ago. That's like having Bernie Sanders' endorsement in West Virginia. If you want to win over voters in Georgia, Arizona and Nevada, getting the Squad's approval isn't a shortcut to the majority. Watch Rep. Jayapal talk out of both sides of her mouth:

If I were advising Sen. Sinema, I'd advise her to vote no just on the fact that siding with the Squad is political suicide in Arizona. The same goes for advising Sen. Kelly.

Sen. Manchin is spinning his decision with this statement:

I have worked diligently to get input from all sides on the legislation my Democratic colleagues have proposed and listened to the views of my Republican friends to find a path forward that removes inflationary policies so that Congress can respond to Americans’ suffering from high prices. Based on that work, I now propose and will vote for the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Rather than risking more inflation with trillions in new spending, this bill will cut the inflation taxes Americans are paying, lower the cost of health insurance and prescription drugs, and ensure our country invests in the energy security and climate change solutions we need to remain a global superpower through innovation rather than elimination.
Raising taxes while you're going into a recession is foolish. Raising taxes a day after you've entered a recession is downright stupid. As usual, President Reagan captured the moment perfectly in his single debate with Jimmy Carter. That's when he said that a recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose your job. And the recovery starts when Jimmy Carter loses his job. I'll settle for Joe Biden, Joe Manchin, 5-6 Democrat senators and 50+ Democrat House members lose their jobs.

Based on Sen. Manchin's quote about election politics, that's within reach.
