How Democrat special interest groups are a threat to democracy
Democrats have criticized President Trump as a constant threat to democracy. Democrats on the January 6 Committee have insisted repeatedly that we almost lost our democracy that day. In reality, that's more than a little over-the-top in terms of melodrama.
While there was some lawlessness that day, we didn't come close to losing our government that day. That's just the Democrats' chanting point. It isn't reality. That being said, there have been some tense times where this nation's institutions have come under attack.
Kim Strassel is one of DC's most gifted political writers. In this article, she wrote about some real threats to democracy. None of the things she wrote about have anything to do with January 6. Her Potomac Watch article starts in Oregon. Here's what she wrote:
Viewers of the Jan. 6 committee docudrama this week received two new installments of the standard liberal narrative: America nearly lost its democracy thanks to an extremist GOP.The threat isn't just directed at pro-life organizations:Residents of Oregon last Friday received the far uglier, far messier reality. They woke up to a torched building after pro-abortion activists threw an incendiary device through the window of the Gresham Pregnancy Resource Center near Portland. The group provides counseling and medical services to vulnerable pregnant women and new mothers.
The firebombing is one of an estimated 24 attacks on pregnancy centers and pro-life groups since the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade leaked on May 2. An outfit called Jane’s Revenge says it perpetrated some of the attacks, several featuring graffiti reading: "If abortion isn’t safe, you aren’t either."
The attacks come amid news of a plot to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Nicholas Roske, angry over the draft opinion, allegedly showed up at the justice’s house packing a pistol, ammunition, a knife, duct tape and zip ties. A radical group called Ruth Sent Us responded to the threat against Justice Kavanaugh by organizing more protests outside justices’ homes. News organizations last month reported on a Department of Homeland Security memo warning of growing threats to courts, lawmakers, the clergy and medical providers from a range of violent extremists. The goal is to essentially annihilate the principle of an independent judiciary. These terrorists, atheists and anarchists hate America. This isn't about just influencing the Roe ruling, though that's certainly the catalyst. It's about destroying any institution that stands in these terrorists' way.
You can't complain for months after you don't get your way. Further, you can't change the rules because you lost. The Declaration of Independence rightly says that declarations of that magnitude shouldn't be done "for light and transient causes." If Roe is overturned, states will deal with it. In any case, a statute would have to get passed to make abortion illegal. In the vast majority of states, that won't happen.
This is what happens when you don't shut down terrorists. They think they can do anything.
