Democrats' dull docudrama dilemma

I watched last night's dull docudrama, aka 1/6 Hearing, so you wouldn't have to. ABC reports that "our democracy is in danger." That's actually a quote from Committee Chair Bennie Thompson. The biggest takeaway from last night's first hearing is that Democrats need something more than what they trotted out last night.

To hear Thompson tell it, a disorganized, unprepared bunch of people were on the verge of toppling the world's biggest superpower without any firearms and without much of a plan. The videotape showed some unarmed people unexpectedly getting into the Capitol. Others clearly had a plan, though they weren't that well-equipped.

Another takeaway was that nothing jumped out at people. That's stunning considering the fact that the Democrats' key witnesses weren't cross-examined. That's because Speaker Pelosi vetoed the people that Kevin McCarthy picked. Think of it like a trial where only the prosecutors got to call witnesses and ask the questions.

In that setting, the 'home team' should run up the score. Instead, it turned out to be a snore fest. From the Washington Times article:

Thursday night’s hearing also featured "previously unseen material" of hundreds of rioters violently breaking into the Capitol, shoving past the police and forcing their way through doors and windows.
Q: Why was it easy for "hundreds of rioters" to shove "past police" and force "their way" into the Capitol? Would they have been stopped dead in their tracks if Pelosi had called in the National Guard troops that President Trump authorized 2 days earlier?

Apparently, Liz Cheney rejects Kash Patel and Mark Meadows' account of Trump authorizing the National Guard troops. These are honorable men with records of not lying. Still, Ms. Cheney ignores that lengthy history.

Last night's show pulled together some interesting soundbites and a few touching moments but it fell short of proving that President Trump masterminded a coup to stay as president. That, by the way, is what Liz Cheney promised they would prove. The presentation was long on accusations but short on actual proof.

The presentation did more to prove the panel's Trump Derangement Syndrome than prove Trump's guilt of an attempted coup. Finally, there wasn't any footage of a well-organized mob with a battle plan. There was footage of Capitol Police who weren't properly trained, staffed or equipped. That's on Pelosi, not Trump. Of course, Pelosi won't get questioned. Apparently, she's sent out word that she's off-limits. So much for this kangaroo committee's legitimacy.
