The Democrats' border crisis, Henry Cuellar vs. Jessica Cisneros edition

Anyone that thinks that Republicans aren't sitting in great position to make Texas redder hasn't read Kim Strassel's latest column. Democrats are primarying Henry Cuellar, who's represented Texas's 28 District the past 17 years. Cuellar is being primaried by Jessica Cisneros, "a progressive attorney who supports lifting Title 42..."

Strassel writes that if Cisneros defeats Cuellar in the primary, that "may cede the district to the GOP." I'll take it a step further. Whether Cisneros or Cuellar wins the primary, this race is likely a GOP flip. Rep. Cuellar is the most reasonable Democrat on immigration policy but he's still squishy.

Cuellar still thinks that Trump's wall "is a 14th century solution to a 21st century problem." Apparently, he hasn't done his research on Trump's wall. But I digress.

This is a problem for Democrats:

The question is whether the president can step out from the bubble long enough to see the world outside. Vulnerable Democrats are running from the administration’s plan to end Title 42 pandemic restrictions, which make it easier for the government to block migrants at the border. At least nine Senate Democrats have voiced opposition. Centrist Democrats this week pounced on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Democratic statewide candidates from Arizona to Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have criticized the administration.

They see polls like this week’s Politico/Morning Consult survey showing that 60% of voters favor extending Title 42 and only 24% think it should end. Images of even more border chaos could spell November disaster. Yet the White House—as ever—remains in thrall to activists who insist any border security is "inhumane," and who are gunning for Democrats who dare object—Democrats like Mr. Cuellar, whose district is a microcosm of these dynamics.

Cisneros says that she's for "humane borders." That's the euphemism for open borders. She isn't bashful about her support of socialist economic policies, either. This video is "paid for by Friends of Bernie Sanders":

This isn't what the Democrats want to hear:
A March Wall Street Journal poll found that Hispanic voters nationwide said they would back a Republican for Congress over a Democrat by 9 points. An April Quinnipiac poll found Mr. Biden’s approval among Hispanics at a shocking 26%, compared with 33% of Americans overall.

The shift is even more profound in the Rio Grande Valley. The 28th District is home to Zapata County, which is nearly 95% Latino or Hispanic. Zapata voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 by a 33-point margin. Four years later, Donald Trump outpolled Mr. Biden by 5 points. In nearby Starr County, Mrs. Clinton won by 58 points. Mr. Biden won by 5. He won the district by only 4.

That isn't a swing. That's a total rejection of the Democrats' agenda.
