Russia-Ukraine War, half measures don't work edition
When Russian troops failed to take Kyiv swiftly, we should've known that Russia's military couldn't live up to the media's hyping of the Russian military. Those of us who are holdovers from the Reagan Doctrine understand that the Russian military is limited.
Reagan didn't believe that Russia was a super-power. He knew that they were a nuclear power. He also knew that the Soviet economy was dwarfed by the U.S. economy. Nations that don't have strong economies aren't super-powers. Period. Full stop.
According to the Stars & Stripes article, "The training, which will occur outside Ukraine, will teach Ukrainian forces to operate the 155mm howitzers. They will then return to the fight and train other Ukrainians to use the American cannons, the official said. The aid package includes 40,000 artillery rounds."
I'm happy to hear that the U.S. is finally getting Ukraine the things it needs to defeat Putin's Russia. It's long past time. The lesson future presidents (and the American people) should take from this is that half-measures don't work. It's time to either go all-in or time to stay out.In this instance, the decision should've been simple. Since Ukraine wasn't asking for U.S. troops to fight their war, we should've flooded the zone with lethal weaponry 2-3 months before Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
For that reason, Biden should get a failing grade. Biden's half-in disposition was bad enough. Then slow-walking the delivery of aid to Ukraine got people killed. That's unacceptable. This segment is worth viewing:
It's still a mater of too little too late but it's better than doing nothing. If Ukraine pushes Russia out of the Donbas region, it will be because of Biden and despite Biden. A real commander-in-chief would've helped Ukraine without hesitation. Unfortunately, we don't have one at the time.
