Justin Trudeau vs. Jason Kenney, Candice Bergen, Canada's Constitution

Things are going to get messy for Justin Trudeau, officially Canada's prime minister, unofficially Canada's authoritarian. That's because Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act under questionable conditions. Some Canadian politicians criticized him for invoking the Emergencies Act from the floor of Parliament. Put Candice Bergen, the interim leader of the Conservative Party in Canada, firmly in that category. Jason Kenney is Alberta's Premier. He's announced that he's filing a lawsuit against Trudeau's invoking of the Emergencies Act for insufficient constitutional grounds.

Let's start with Leader Bergen's inspired leadership and fiery speeches. In this speech, Leader Bergen laid out PM Trudeau's violations of Canadians' rights:

Jason Kenney used this speech to announce his lawsuit against PM Trudeau's invocation of the Emergencies Act: In his speech, Kenney said "the act is 'an unnecessary and disproportionate measure that can violate civil liberties, invades provincial jurisdiction and creates a very dangerous precedent for the future.'" Alberta is filing a Court challenge to the unjustified use of the Emergencies Act. We may also intervene in support of other Court challenges. As Tommy Douglas said about the use of the War Measures Act in 1970, it’s like "using a sledgehammer to crack a peanut."

PM Trudeau's invocation of the Emergencies Act is an authoritarian act that civil libertarians must vehemently reject immediately. Freezing bank accounts without a court order is outrageous on steroids. Let's hope that Premier Kenney's lawsuit succeeds. If it doesn't, all hell might break loose.
