Enes Kanter's profile in courage
Enes Kanter isn't just another athlete. He is a profile in courage. He's earned that title for having the courage to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party, aka the CCP. This morning, the Wall Street Journal published Kanter's op-ed, which highlights the CCP's brutality and oppression of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai.
According to Mr. Kanter's op-ed, "Shuai took to social media earlier this month to accuse a former top-ranking official in the Chinese Communist Party of sexually assaulting her. Within 30 minutes the post was scrubbed from the internet in China. She disappeared and no one has heard directly from her since." Then Kanter took a not-so-veiled shot at LeBron James, saying "We must also stop giving priority to money over morals. Claiming we are 'misinformed' or 'not really educated' should no longer be an excuse." Then he gives 'King James' a history lesson worth learning:
Athletes can play a profound role in helping turn the tide toward a more safe and free world. History has shown what is possible. Bill Russell stood up against racial injustice. Muhammad Ali protested the Vietnam War. Arthur Ashe spoke out against apartheid in South Africa.Kanter also spoke truth to power in this paragraph:
The sports community must wake up—and speak up. We need to realize that the authoritarian Chinese government isn’t our friend. The Communist Party is a brutal dictatorship that has weaponized economic power to achieve ideological and political compliance. The Women's Tennis Association is threatening to pull its business out of China if Shuai isn't found: Will King James have the integrity to do the same? Or will he bow to Xi Jengping to keep the money flowing into his bank accounts? I'm betting on the latter, not the former. James is the opposite of Kanter. He'll do anything for money. If James needs to shut up to keep the paychecks flowing from China, then silent he will be.
Kanter isn't like that. He's speaking up for what's important. He's speaking up for something bigger than himself.
That's why he's earned the title of profile in courage.
