The civil rights issue of our time?
Has Big Tech become the civil rights issue of our time? After reading Bari Weiss's introduction to Abigail Shrier's article, I'm convinced that stopping Big Tech censorship is the civil rights issue of our time. As the title says, "Books are already burning."
Weiss's introduction starts by saying "Do you remember the names Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying? I wrote one of my earliest New York Times columns about the bravery they displayed as tenured professors, words that do not typically appear in the same sentence, at Evergreen State College. It was 2017 and the professors, both evolutionary biologists, opposed the school’s “Day of Absence,” in which white students were asked to leave campus for the day. You can imagine what followed. For questioning a day of racial segregation wearing the garments of social justice, the pair was smeared as racist. Following serious threats, they left town for a time with their children, lost many of their friends, and, ultimately, resigned their jobs."
This is modern-day McCarthyism. These professors were persecuted for asking questions and for not being woke enough. If that's a crime, then we're finished as a society. It's impossible to live up to the Wokaristas' high standards. I love hearing this, though:
But they refused to shut up. They started a podcast called DarkHorse, where they suggested in April 2020 that Covid-19 could have come from the lab in Wuhan, a position that made them a laughingstock among so-called experts more than a year before Jon Stewart talked about it on The Late Show.
This is the Jon Stewart clip:
Count how often Colbert tries to derail Stewart's message. Count how often Colbert's face essentially says 'Stop, Jon. You're hurting Democrats with this crazy talk.' There's only 1 time when Colbert asks "When did you start working for Ron Johnson?" That says it all right there. This was fun to watch because Stewart doesn't have to listen to the Wokaristas anymore. He's retired. He's likely thinking 'they can kiss my a$$ if they don't like what I'm saying.'
