Mayors highlight Minnesota's, DFL's, economic decline
In their letter, they wrote "For taxpayers, local governments, and businesses here in the Brainerd Lakes Area, this is more than disappointing; it is alarming. Fraud, unchecked spending, and inconsistent fiscal management in St. Paul are beginning to trickle down to our cities, placing strain on local budgets and making responsible, long-term planning more difficult." These aren't fresh-out-of-college students wondering where (or if) their career will get started. For the most part, these are people who are closer to their finish line than to their starting wire. The numbers from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce's "2026 'Business Benchmarks' report" are more than disturbing:
The report isn't finished, though. Check this out:In addition to the statistics in the chart, Minnesota ranks 44th in tech job growth and 44th in overall tax competitiveness. Making matters worse: Minnesota lost nearly 48,000 residents to other states from 2020–2024.If you think that you've hit bottom, think again. Per capita per person GDP 'rose' by a pathetic 1% per year between 2019-2024. That isn't economic growth. That's stagnation. While Gov. Tim Walz is to fault on this, so is the DFL legislature, especially the 2023 Trifecta legislature. Swapping out Tim Walz for another washed-out socialist won't change the culture. What's required is a capitalist trifecta!
The Plague of Unfunded Mandates
"We, as mayors, can only support our communities for so long before the heavy hand of state mandates and financial pressure demands more than our cities can provide," the letter says. This MUST STOP! That which is unsustainable won't be sustained. This, though, is enlightening: Bernie Sanders loves saying that socialism is becoming mainstream. No, it isn't. It's still failed everywhere it's been tried. Socialism is a failure! Period! The next place socialism succeeds will be the first place it succeeds.Unfunded mandates negatively impact city budgets budgets by shifting the financial burden of state and federal requirements to local taxpayers, forcing difficult choices between increasing property taxes and cutting services.
The DFL these days is a collection of varying degrees of socialism. Reread the opening paragraphs of the article. It's a description of socialism and top-down control. That's the opposite of capitalism.
